Youth soccer teams to play US High school over xmas

Players from the Dolly Madison Youth Soccer Academy host Westminster High School next week in two highly anticipated soccer games as the two sets of youngsters battle for the Whirlpool International Challenge Cup.

The games are to be played at Freeport Rugby & Football Club on

Thursday December 20th kick off 7pm

Friday December 21st kick off 6pm

Westminster High School, who are based in Florida, are bringing a squad of 20 players aged 15 to 18 for 3 days and will play 2 games against the best players that Grand Bahama can offer.

The Island’s players, who all play in the local Intermediate Soccer League , have been practising as a team for the last 3 weeks in preparation for the games and their coach, Mark Hardy, is confident that they will put up a good showing. He noted that the players have been playing in both the local Whirlpool League as well as getting together for the first time as a team to play against a local men’s team (Freeport FC). Given that the players have not played together as a unit before Hardy is happy with their progress to date.

So far approximately 18 players have been invited to try out for the Academy team which is effectively a Grand Bahamas All Star under 18s XI.

To date the preliminary squad includes: Connor Goodrum, Kevin Charlton, Roger Johnson , Jordan Farquason, Nicholas Joseph , Denzil Deveaux, Willie , Ralston Francis, Sam Taylor , Gunsov Navarrone, Kerlin Emile, Andre Turnquest, Terry Augustin , Aaron Levarity , Marco Borsetto, Christopher Malakious and ONeall ‘Yardie’ Marshall .

Fellow Coach Scott Kirkland noted the team has strength in all areas and blends the older stronger players, with some very good ‘ball players’ and, more intriguingly, youngsters with real potential and skill but without the physical attributes at this time. However that there was still a couple of players that the coaches were expecting out to practice with a hope of making the final squad , which is to be finallised next week.

All parents, players and supporters are encouraged to come and watch the games, 7pm Thursday 20th and 6pm Friday 21st.

Bahamas cup - Freeport Stun Cuckoos

Freeport stun Cuckoo’s

44 – 13

Freeport visited Nassau for what was anticipated as a showdown of potential Bahamas Cup Champions! A hard fought game was expected and this was the case after the first 20 minutes when Cuckoo’s larger forwards started to dominate the less experienced Freeport pack and with 5 minutes Cuckoo’s roared on by the Nassau crowd scored! Many thought this was the end of Freeport but little did they know what was to come! By the 24 minute Freeport scored a dazzling try by Gio Rolle and a conversation and penalty by Kasay Charlton draw the teams level at 13 – 13. Just before half time George Walker scored his first try for Freeport with a slick centers move with Edwin Joseph and Freeport went into the half 20-13 ahead with another conversation by the ever maturing Kasey Charlton, who already looks a better player than his dad!

Freeport came out firing in the second half and played some champagne rugby with Perkins Joseph and Edwin Joseph seemingly breaking tackles and carving the Cuckoo’s to pieces at will and soon Gio Rolle and both Edwin and Perkins Joseph had scored superb tries and soon the crowd were cheering the Freeport play. The pack found there groove with Ricardence Michels, Brad Culmer and Marco Surin all having personal best games. The other lead by Leon “not straight” Macphee gave the backs some majestic ball and the old hand John Lane made full use of this and again Gio Rolle sprinted over the line for another try! By the time Cuckoo’s had realized what had happened the game was out of reach and out of sight and Freeport finished off with an amazing 44-13 win and topping the Bahamas Cup table going into the Xams break! MAN OF THE MATCH – MARCO SURIN

YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUE: BORCO STUN SMIT DYNAMOS

Borco Oilers maintained their recent fine form to beat Dynamo Smit by 2 goals to zero as the topsy turvy results continued in the Whirlpool Soccer league. Smit came into the game full of confidence after recent victories but found it hard going against a determined Borco team controlled by Kerlin Emile in defence playing a measured game. Goals from Andre Turnquest and Van Rolle, who are both scoring consistently for their team , gave the oilers the edge and their first win of the season. Coach Kasey Charlton was happy with the result and felt his team could now go on the second half of the season to shock a few more teams.

In the second game , AC Millies gained a walk over victory over Cable Bahamas Stars and ended up playing an exciting game against a combined Cable Bahamas/GB Shipyard team. In a game where there was no pressure to win, both teams served up some good football. Youngsters Michael and Aaron worked very well for AC Millies on the right hand side and carved up many chances for their team mates. Unfortunately they met a goalkeeper (Ronest) who had a stellar day and looks set to star in future weeks, especially as he begins working with goalkeeping coach Paul ‘there can be only one’ Highlander. Primarily as a result of his goalkeeping , the opposition were able to take the game to AC Millies and , in an open game, took the win with goals for Tootz Sands and ‘Yardie’ ONeal. Roger Johnson got the solitary goal for AC Millies who will be looking to improve in the second half of the season under new coach Santos.

Standings after Round 4
GB Shipyard 9 points
Dynamo Smit 6 points
AC Millies 6 points
Cable Bahamas Stars 3 points
Borco Oilers 3 points

Games continue each and every Wednesday from 5pm

GEO ROLLE SELECTED FOR WEST INDIES TRIALS

GEO ROLLE SELECTED FOR WEST INDIES TRIALS

Geo Rolle, 19 yrs of age, of Grand Bahama has been selected to travel to Trinidad this week for trials for the West Indies 7’s Rugby Team. If selected Geo will travel around the world with the team representing the Bahamas (Caribbean) in the 2008 7’S Rugby circuit which includes the Hong Kong 7’s, San Diago 7’s and several tournaments in Europe. Geo who is 19 and works for the Freeport Container Port has been playing rugby since he was 13 and over recent years has progressed to a high level which culminated in playing for the Bahamas two weekends ago in the Caribbean 7’s held in Nassau. From his display in Nassau the West Indies selectors picked him for the trails this week. The selectors have picked a squad of 20 players of which 12 will be selected for the West Indies team who will play the Trinidad sevens this weekend as a final tryout for the final selection. Geo wishes to thank The Freeport Container Port for their understanding in giving him time of work and we all hope Geo makes the team and can represent Grand Bahama and The Bahamas on the world stage.

Freeport 37 – Buccaneers 5

In the opening game of the 2007/8 Bahamas Cup Freeport ran out winners against the Buccaneers of Nassau 37-5. Missing some regular players Freeport started with a flourish and scored two tries within the first ten minutes of the game with Miles Wilkinson and Perkins Joseph both scoring and Kacey Charlton converting one the tries. With the return of Aaron Turnquest and John Lane after a couple of seasons the backs of Freeport ran the opposition ragged with some fine ball handling. George Walker and Geo Rolle kept the ball flowing and punished Buc’s bu setting up Aaron Turnquest to chip over the top of the defense and score himself. Up front the likes of Leon Mcphee, Nicky Russell and Brad Culmer secured good ball for Freeport and the flankers of Perkins Joseph and Miles Wilkinson ensured the Buc’s back line never had chance to secure good ball. Leading 20-0 at the half Freeport struggle in the first 20 minutes of the second have to break the defense before Perkins Joseph who had just returned from the sin bin scored three quick tries and ran the opposition all over the park.

FREEPORT'S NEXT GAME IS DECEMBER 8 V CUCKOOS IN NASSAU
